BAKER CITY (AP) - A postal worker shot and killed a female co-worker outside their workplace in this small Eastern Oregon city Tuesday afternoon, Baker County authorities said.

The shooter was taken into custody shortly after the 4:15 p.m. incident, the sheriff's office said. The names of the gunman and the victim were withheld, pending notification of family members.

The Baker City post office is in the David J. Wheeler Federal Building. The Baker City Herald reported that the victim's car had six visible bullet holes - three in the windshield and three in the hood - and her body could be seen toward the rear of the federal building parking lot, near the Powder River.

Employees of the Wallowa-Whitman National Forest, whose headquarters is upstairs in the federal building, were evacuated when a fire alarm went off.
