Understanding Medicare drug plans

Monday, February 27, 2006 |
Educated volunteers are available in Coos County to help Medicare recipients understand and access Medicare Part D drug plans.
The volunteers are able to clearly illustrate to each person the plans that will cover them best. They do this with a computer program, utilizing the Web-based tool designed by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid and the client's individual medications.
Those who may qualify for “extra help” through Social Security in paying Medicare Part D premiums can also be assisted in enrolling. The service is unbiased and free, provided by Senior Health Insurance Benefits Assistance volunteers. These specially-trained volunteers are a part of the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program.
For an appointment in Coos Bay or North Bend, those interested can phone 888-7395. Those living in Bandon can call Lyn at 347-1585; in Powers, call Dixie at 439-2446. An appointment with a SHIBA volunteer at the North Bend Medical Center Resource Center can be set up by calling 267-5151, ext. 401.
