Babe Ruth meeting scheduled for Sunday

South Coast Babe Ruth will hold its first general meeting for the 2006 season at 3 p.m. on Sunday at the North Bend Fire Hall.

The League is in need of managers and coaching staffs for the 13-year-old age group. All people interested in managing 13-year-old teams are encouraged to attend and fill out a managers and coaches application.

Applications also can be obtained by calling Mike Taylor at 756-5443 or Rick Spring at 756-4669.

Additional items of discussion at Sunday's meetings will include game schedules, tournaments and draft procedures, new age limits, bylaw changes and field upgrades.

For more information, those interested can contact Taylor or Spring at the above numbers.

Coaches meeting

There will be a coaches meeting at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday at the Boys & Girls Club of Southwestern Oregon for all volunteer spring soccer and track & field coaches.

Coach packets and equipment will be available at that time. All coaches not yet certified should plan to view the certification video as well as complete the short questionnaire.

Practices start any time after Feb. 27 and games will begin on Saturday, April 1.

Those interested can contact the club office at 267-3635 for more information.

Registration continues

Spring registration for spring soccer and track & field continues at the Boys & Girls Club.

All boys and girls in grades 1 to 6 may participate in soccer or those in grades 4 to 6 may select track field.

The fee is $40 with a current club membership. Practices may begin after Feb. 27 and games will start April 1. Students are encouraged to register early to reserve a spot on a team.

For more information, those interested can call the club office at 267-3635.

Track camp

SeaBreeze Track and Field Camp for boys at girls in grades 4 through 8 will be held at the North Bend High School track from March 27-31.

The camp will run from 9:30 a.m. to noon each day.

Athletes are encouraged to register now at the Boys & Girls Club.

The camp will focus on fundamentals and skills necessary to run, jump and throw.

Forms are available at local schools, the club office, or online at www.bgc-sworegon.org.

Girls wrestling championships

The sixth-annual Oregon Girls Wrestling Championships is scheduled for Saturday, March 4, at David Douglas HighSchool in Portland.

Weigh-in and registration will be held from 7 to 9 a.m. and wrestling starts at 10 a.m.

The cost is $25 per wrestler at the door.

Girls wrestling is one of the fastest-growing sports for high school girls in the United States, according to the United States Girls Wrestling Association.

Several wrestlers competed in recent district meets in Oregon and at least two qualified for the state meet, including one from Lebanon in the Midwestern League.

Misty Corwin of Waldport placed fifth in the 103-pound weight class at the Class 2A-1A state meet in Salem.

Earlier this month, Michaela Hutchinson of Skyview High School in Soldotna, Alaska, became the first girl to win a state championship, taking the 103-pound weight class with a 1-0 decision in the finals.

According to USGWA, five Oregon girls are ranked in the top 12 in the country in their weight class, including Corwin, ranked fifth at 100 pounds.

The girls state championships will be followed by the national championshipos, scheduled for April 1-2 at Lake Orion, Mich. Last year, that event drew 622 wrestlers.
