ROSEBURG (AP) - A 16-year-old boy was wounded early today in a shooting at Roseburg High School and was in critical condition, police said. A suspect, also a male, was arrested, police said.

Police spokesman Sgt. Aaron Dunbar said the shooter appeared to be a student but that it is not clear whether the victim is a student or a staff member.

According to a Douglas County Sheriff's Office press release, the shooting occurred near the south side of the high school by the school's courtyard.

The release indicated that police located the suspect in the 800 block of Harvard Avenue, where a brief standoff occurred. The suspect held a gun to his head and threatened suicide. The standoff lasted less than five minutes with the suspect surrendering to police.

The release indicated the school went into a lockdown mode in which no students were being allowed out, and no parents were being allowed in.

Dunbar said the victim was sent to Mercy Hospital for treatment.

Dunbar said the shooting was at about 7:45 a.m. and that the suspect was cornered by police after fleeing the campus.

The suspect was not immediately identified and no motive for the shooting was disclosed.

A nearby elementary school also was locked down as a precaution.
