Coquille residents will be paying more for garbage collection service this month, after the City Council voted unanimously to approve a rate increase.

The rate will for a single can will go to $17.35, a 6-percent increase. The hike will be 7 percent for two cans, to $30.70. Each additional can will cost $13.35, an increase of 8 percent.

Also going up will be the rates for 1-cubic-yard containers, to $96; and the rate for 1.5-cubic-yard containers, to $149, including a $10 rental fee.

Wadsworth Garbage Disposal, the company that has exclusive rights to collect garbage in Coquille, requested the rate change to keep up with rising insurance and fuel costs.

“Basically it's the fuel costs,” said garbage company spokeswoman Jean Wadsworth.

She said this is the first rate increase in five years, the last one being in May of 2000.

The council also voted to make the rate increase retroactively effective on Jan. 1. Residents will receive their first bills for January and February, with the new rate, in March.
