North Bend girls coast to easy win over Bruins

North Bend's girls basketball team rolled to a 38-8 halftime lead and coasted to a 57-21 blowout victory Tuesday over visiting Brookings-Harbor.

“Offensively and defensively we did what I wanted us to in the first half,” North Bend coach Mike Forrester said. “Their girls played hard and I think our girls played hard back.”

In the second half, though, the rebuilding Bruins managed to maintain the status quo through the third quarter, but trimmed the deficit by outscoring North Bend 20-11 in the fourth quarter.

Kellie Holmstedt led the Bulldogs with 13 points, while Alysha Moore tallied 10 and Cheyanna Ohlrich nine.

Jessalyn Breen and Tiffany Jones led the Bruins with five points each.

“Our goal tonight was to play smart and play aggressive,” Brookings-Harbor coach JoAnn VanDerschaaf said. “We played aggressive on defense but we still need to be a little smarter and a little more patient.”

North Bend improved to 2-1, good for a tie with South Umpqua for second place behind Douglas in the Far West League standings, and Brookings-Harbor is winless at 0-3.

Despite the record, the first-year head coach VanDerschaaf said the team is making strides toward a brighter future.

“We're improving every practice. We're learning every game,” she said. “We should progress. We have nowhere to go but up and that's the exciting thing.”

Coquille falls

Coquille shot 20 more free throws than visiting Sutherlin, but still couldn't manage to pull out a win as the Bulldogs handed the Red Devils their second straight league loss, 56-37.

Junior post Marji Maxfield had a game-high 18 points for Sutherlin and added five steals and seven rebounds.

Holli Dieu led the Red Devils with 14 points. But Coquille couldn't take advantage of being in the bonus in the first quarter as they went 5-for-11 from the charity strip in the first half and 10-for-26 on the night.

Coquille got off to a fast start with a 9-2 run to start the game, but late in the quarter the Bulldogs went on their own run, scoring the last five points of the first quarter and the first six points of the second.

Dieu finally broke the run with a jumper almost halfway through the quarter. Sutherlin went into halftime with a nine-point lead and put the game away by out-scoring Coquille 16-7 in the final quarter.

Trojans perfect with win

Douglas held on to win Tuesday night over host South Umpqua, 45-38.

Lucy Valenzuela led all scorers with 14 points for the Trojans. Marcie Garcia had nine points for the Lancers.

The win keeps Douglas in first place of the Far West League with a record of 3-0.

Big Fir League

Bobcats win

Myrtle Point stayed perfect in Big Fir League play by beating visiting Reedsport 48-20.

“We played well defensively,” Myrtle Point coach Marty Stallard said after his team limited the Braves to six points after halftime. “We executed on offense when we had to and got the break going in the second half.”

Ashley Duey led the Bobcats with 14 points and Morgan Grove scored 10. Trista Willis had 10 points to lead the Braves.

Yoncalla wins in OT

Yoncalla out-scored Bandon 4-1 in overtime and beat the visiting Tigers 36-33 Tuesday night.

Charlie VanLoon scored a game-high 20 points for Yoncalla. Rachel Caldwell led Bandon with 15 points, including three 3-pointers.

Wildcats top Pirates

Glide pulled away from Pacific in the second half for a 43-27 win over the host Pirates on Tuesday.

“We gave them a little run toward the end of the second quarter, but they came out and hit us with an 8-0 run right off the bat (in the third quarter) and that spelled the end right there,” Pacific coach James Freitag said.

Kelsey Waybrant had a game-high 18 points for the Wildcats. Lacey Weinblatt had 16 in the losing effort for Pacific, which showed improvement in defeat, according to Freitag.

Oakland wins

Tennille Maples had 19 points, eight steals and six rebounds as Oakland beat visiting North Douglas 60-42 on Tuesday.

The Oakers moved into a tie for third place with Reedsport at 6-3 in league play.

Brooke Toy had 14 points to lead the Warriors.

Sky-Em League

Spartans top Vikings

Rachel Copeland had 24 points to lead Marist past host Siuslaw 69-58.

Melissa Voogd and Jessica Saxon led Siuslaw with 13 points each.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Far West League

Devils edge Sutherlin

Justin Parnell just missed a game-winning shot Tuesday night and Sutherlin suffered its first Far West League loss, falling 45-44 at Coquille.

The Bulldogs dropped into a four-way tie for first place with the Red Devils, South Umpqua and Brookings-Harbor.

With the last seconds ticking off the clock and Sutherlin down by one, Parnell, last year's league most valuable player, took an outside shot and watched as the ball went in the basket and came back out, giving Coquille the win.

“My guys went out and gave 32 minutes of effort and when we do that we will be successful,” Coquille coach Dan Cumberland said.

John Maxwell led Coquille with 16 points, including three 3-pointers, and Shaun Bready added 13 points and eight rebound.

“John had the hot hand tonight and hit some cloth shots for us down the stretch,” Cumberland said. “Shaun did a really good job for us, he rebounded well and kept the ball alive.”

Parnell had eight rebounds and three assists to go along with his game-high 18 points.

“We did a good job on Justin,” Cumberland said. “He is a good ball player and he is capable of scoring 30. We just needed to contain him. We did a pretty good job of that.”

The Red Devils were coming off a two-point loss at South Umpqua on Friday.

“Most of our games this season have been close,” Cumberland said. “We are doing better at keeping our focus and our composure at the end of games.”

Lancers win

The third quarter made all the difference as South Umpqua outscored visiting Douglas 19-6 to take the lead for good in a 67-49 win Tuesday night.

Coty Clack led South Umpqua with 17 points, including four 3-pointers, while Brandon Justice and Zack Hancock did their part by scoring 12 points each. Hancock had four 3-pointers as well.

Josh Quimby of Douglas was the leading scorer with 18 points.

Big Fir League

Pacific win streak

After going two full seasons without a Big Fir League win, Pacific now is on a win streak.

The Pirates beat visiting Glide 44-34 for their second straight victory.

Pacific celebrated Saturday's win over Yoncalla by cutting down the net.

“I said, ‘The curse has been broken,'” said Pacific coach Tom Dill.

The Pirates came out Tuesday and took an 11-5 lead after the first quarter and then outscored the Wildcats in each of the other three quarters to guarantee another victory.

“It's great,” Dill said. “The kids played hard and played great defense like they have been all year. Our offensive execution was good. Just the all-around hustle by everyone was great.”

John Swenson had his second straight monster game for Pacific with 16 points and 20 rebounds.

“He's boarding like crazy,” Dill said. “He's a smart defender. He gets in position and blocks out.”

Nate Wayne added nine points and Zane Martindale eight for Pacific. Dana Basiliades led Glide with 10.

Bobcats prevail

Myrtle Point made its free throws late in the game to pull away from visiting Reedsport for a 53-47 Big Fir League victory.

“It was a good high school game,” Myrtle Point coach Sam Clark said. “It was really close all the way. (Reedsport coach) Kevin (Hague) does a real good job with those kids.”

Clark attributed the Bobcats' success to assists and rebounding. The team tallied 11 assists for the game, along with 26 rebounds.

Garren Hitner led the way in that category with 12 boards to go along with his 15 points. Scott Buche added 19 points and seven boards for Myrtle Point.

Justin Fulps led the Braves with 16 points and Daniel Plotz added 12.

“We played well,” Clark said. “It was more of a team effort this time than it had been. They were patient. They looked for things that they haven't been looking for before. It was just fun to see them actually kind of get there or start to get there.”

Tigers win

Four of Bandon's players had 10 points or more in a 67-23 blowout over host Yoncalla.

Justin Smith and Trenton Fraser each had 12 points, followed by Joel Haga with 11 and Darren Stolz with 10. Eric Thorp of Yoncalla led the way for his team with seven.

The Tigers stayed perfect in league play at 8-0.

Oakers win big

Oakland stayed within one loss of Bandon in the Big Fir League standings by beating visiting North Douglas 74-51 on Tuesday.

Danny Derry had 25 points and Andrew Brenner added 23 for the Oakers, who pulled away by outscoring the Warriors 25-8 in the second quarter.

Dustin Andes had 23 points for the Warriors, who could have moved into second place with a win and instead dropped to 5-2 in league play.

Sky-Em League

Vikings fall

Freshman Rahkim Price scored 20 points off the bench to lead Marist to a 64-34 win over visiting Siuslaw on Tuesday in Sky-Em League play.

Drew Holden led the Vikings with 15 points. Jordan Rainwater added eight.

SWIMMING

Marshfield dominated visiting Willamette, winning every race at Mingus Park in a Midwestern League dual that earlier had been postponed.

Marshfield's girls beat the Wolverines 117-36, while the Pirate boys won 110-24.

Individual winners for Marshfield's girls were Kate McMullan (200 freestyle, 100 butterfly), Kaley Brownell (200 individual medley, 100 backstroke), Koree Dean (50 freestyle), Chantelle Hanson (100 freestyle), Brittany Sadler (500 freestyle) and Jessica Walker (100 breaststroke).
