Food-handling training classes held at OCCI

Regularly scheduled food handler training classes, which are taught by Coos County's environmental health specialists, are held at the new Oregon Coast Culinary Institute at Southwestern Oregon Community College, 1988 Newmark Ave., in Coos Bay.
Classes are held at 1 p.m. on the first Tuesday of the month and at 6 p.m. on the third Tuesday of the month.
To register, those interested can call 888-7622.
Walk-in testing, without the class, also is available from 8 to 11 a.m. every Wednesday, in the Health Department, located in the North Bend Annex, 1975 McPherson St.
The cost for the food handler card is the $10. Students taking the test at either location should prepare by reading the training manual, “Food Safety.” This is available at the North Bend Annex for $2, or available for loan at all Coos County libraries. The material also can be accessed online at
