Who, what, where. Why, when.
You know the five Ws, but what then in getting news out to the public?
The World is inviting community groups, service organizations and businesses to a free Wednesday training session to help people learn “How to get your news in the paper.”
The session is scheduled from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the newspaper’s offices, 350 Commercial Ave., in downtown Coos Bay.
Sure, it sounds like a snap to write up a press release and drop it by the newspaper, expecting it to appear in the newspaper. But it’s not quite that easy. Do you know the deadlines for certain sections? Do you know who should receive your information? What’s the best way to write it? Is it really news or should you buy an advertisement?
The World’s editorial and advertising department staffers will be on hand to answer these questions and more.
Topics will include:
n Publicity 101: This session provides tips on writing press releases, how to make contacts and how to get the news into the newsroom.
n Tips on taking photos: The World’s photographers can’t be in two places at once. We are thankful when contributors can provide quality photos from community events we can’t attend.
n Who to call: There are a few key people who ensure information is sent in the right directions for publication in specific sections.
n Even businesses make headlines: This session will offer guidelines on deciding what might be newsworthy and how to share the information.
n Advertisement strategy: Sometimes advertisement is better strategy, but sometimes it’s hard to know. Advertising staffers will discuss ways to promote businesses and where to start.
There will be time to talk with The World’s staff and ask questions. Also, light refreshments will be served.
