Veteran’s Day activities are planned at several venues on the South Coast later this month.

Assembly at Sunset Middle School on Tuesday morning
Sunset Middle School will hold a Veteran’s Day assembly from 9:15 to 10:15 a.m. on Tuesday.
The students and staff would like to honor those veterans who live in the community and surrounding area, and invite them to join in this tribute. Any veterans interested in participating are asked to be at Sunset Middle School, 245 S. Cammann St., in Coos Bay, at 9 a.m. to be seated for the assembly.

Elkton schools to assemble at the high school gymnasium
The Elkton School District will be holding its eighth-annual Veteran’s Day assembly at 9 a.m. on Thursday in the Elkton High School gymnasium, 739 River Road.
This year’s theme is “How I Demonstrate My Freedom,” and the program will include Elkton school’s student speakers, who have been asked to write on why they celebrate Veterans Day. An invitation is extended to all veterans, as well as the community and others interested in attending the program.
The program also will include The Umpqua Singers, Elkton Grade School students performing songs and poems, Reedsport High School Band and Donna Mae Smith, the first woman bugler in the U.S. Army. Near the conclusion of the program, veterans will be asked to stand and be recognized and tell the audience when and where they served.

American Legion to host a breakfast in Coos Bay Friday
The American Legion, Post 34, will hold an annual Veteran’s Day breakfast from 8 a.m. to noon on Friday at the American Legion hall on Airport Way in Coos Bay.
Cost is $5 for adults and $2.50 for children 12 and under. All members and guests are invited. Proceeds will benefit the veterans at the Roseburg VA Hospital. At 11 a.m., CWO Arnold LeCompte, commanding officer of the U.S. Coast Guard Station in Coos Bay, will speak. The auxiliary will have a display of items for the annual Christmas Gift Shop for veterans at the hospital.

Coquille Valley Elks to host a veterans breakfast Friday
The Coquille Valley Elks will host an annual Veteran’s Day breakfast at 10 a.m. on Friday at the Coquille Valley Elks Lodge, 54942 Maple Heights Road, in Coquille.
All veterans and their spouses are welcome to attend. There will be a no-host get-acquainted hour at 9 a.m. The breakfast is free to all veterans.

Eagles, American Legion to hold a banquet Friday night
The American Legion Post 34 and the Eagles Lodge FOE 538 will hold a Veteran’s Day banquet at 6 p.m. on Friday at the Eagles Lodge, 538 S. Second St., in Coos Bay.
Social hour and dinner will start at 5. The annual banquet is to thank all the Bay Area veterans for their service to their country. There is no charge for the banquet.

Flag ceremony planned for Friday morning in North Bend
The public is invited to attend a Veteran’s Day Flag Ceremony at 10 a.m. on Friday at Baycrest Village, 3959 Sheridan Ave., in North Bend.
Those attending will gather in front of the main building. Veterans of the American Legion will perform the ceremony, and a new flag will replace the weathered one.
Veteran’s Day parade to be held on Friday in Roseburg
The 2005 Douglas County Veterans Day Parade will again take place in downtown Roseburg on Friday. This year’s theme is “Got Freedom? Thank a Veteran!”
Parade formation will begin at 9 a.m. and the parade will start at 11. Trophy presentations will be held on the courthouse steps following the end of the parade.
Douglas County and the city of Roseburg have been designated as regional recognition sites by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. The Marshfield High School marching band also will be in the parade.
This year, the Grand Marshals of the parade are Vietnam veterans. Those who are Vietnam veterans and would like to march with the Grand Marshals group are asked to call Rick Freund, Vietnam Veterans of America, at (541) 229-3456.

Harmony Chorus to salute veterans in song Saturday
Sea Breeze Harmony Chorus of Sweet Adelines International invites the public to a salute to veterans, “Red, White & Blue, and Barbershop, Too,” at 2 and 7:30 p.m. on Saturday at Little Theater on the Bay, 2100 Sherman Ave., North Bend.
The guest quartet will be Fourth Avenue.
Tickets cost $10 for the 2 p.m. show, and $12 for the 7:30 p.m. show.

Bandon Historical Society to hold open house for veterans
The Bandon Historical Society is hosting an open house to honor all veterans on Saturday from noon to 3 p.m. at the museum on U.S. Highway 101 at Fillmore Avenue. In addition to the museum's collection of military memorabilia, Rick Hinojosa, Ed Landucci and Val Don Hickerson will have their military artifacts on display. The public is invited to attend and refreshments will be served.
The Bandon Historical Society Museum has a military section that honors veterans from all the wars, beginning with the Civil War. In addition to a photo collection, there are several World War II uniforms, an ammo box and gas mask, a bayonet and trench knife, dog tags and a mess tray.
There are pins, medals and ration books. A binder of collected stories and news clippings of the men who died during World War II is available for reading, as is a large scrapbook of the 1991 Desert Storm campaign, compiled by Dixie Huntley. |
