Alaskan storm waves to hit South Coast

A couple storms in the Gulf of Alaska could bring some wet and wavy weather to the Oregon Coast this weekend and early next week.
The National Weather Service issued a special weather statement Thursday afternoon that said a storm in the Gulf of Alaska is likely to produce high surf on the southern Oregon Coast Saturday night and Sunday.
“Swells of 18 to 20 feet are expected to arrive at the south Oregon Coast Saturday night and last through Sunday. The swells are expected to lower to 15 feet by Sunday night,” the statement said.
By this morning, however, the statement was gone from the NWS Web site.
Weather Service specialist Roger Gerig said the coming storm may not be so bad — a trough of weather stretching down from the Alaska low-pressure system likely will bring the bigger swells but no wind. The resulting weather could result in a small-craft advisory for hazardous seas, but not much wind or rain. The current forecast is calling for only a 20-percent chance of rain Saturday through Sunday, with temperatures around 60 during the day and in the high 40s to lower 50s at night.
Another storm that will move into the Gulf over the weekend will bring with it some wind. The winds, likely about 35 miles per hour, will be just shy of gale force, Gerig said. Swells could be around 14 feet, but not much more. At least, not at this point, Gerig said.
The weakening storm currently in the Gulf of Alaska brought with it swells of between 22 and 26 feet that reached the Southeast Alaska coasts.
The early weather statement also warned visitors about the dangers of high surf and swells at ocean areas.
“Waves of this magnitude can pose a serious threat to people who venture on the beaches or jetties,” it said.
