American Legion seeks donations
Bay Area Post No. 34, American Legion, is making a special effort to support its National Emergency Fund program. In view of the disaster on the Gulf Coast, the Legion is asking all of its members, auxiliary and friends to help by donating funds. The purpose of the program is to meet the needs of Posts or individual members of the Legion family in areas stricken by natural disasters. Those interested in donating can make donations payable to Bay Area Post No. 34, P.O. Box 234, North Bend, OR 97459, and donations will be forwarded on to the national organization. Concert to benefit Gulf Coast victims
Coquille Christian Community Church's seventh-annual fall concert will be held at 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 21 and 22, at the church, located at 10th and Folsom streets in Coquille. Donations will be accepted to benefit those affected by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, and for the Sierra Leone orphanage.
Church, school team to help survivors
The Bay Area Church of the Nazarene and Kingsview Christian School are gathering donations to send to Hurricane Katrina survivors in Slidell, La.; some 25 miles north of New Orleans. The Nazarene church also is looking for a truck to deliver the supplies. The following are recommended donations:
Cleaning supplies: Disposable gloves, 5-gallon buckets with handles, detergent (powder - not liquid), mops, brooms, dustpans, bleach and disinfectant cleaners, sponges, towels and cleaning rags.
Food, non-perishable: Canned meats and stew, spaghetti, canned fruit, minute rice, cereal, peanut butter and jelly, coffee, juice, powdered milk, bottled water and baby foods.
Misc. needs: Tarps and ropes, air mattresses, paper towels, duct tape, box cutters, diapers, Depends for elderly, tin foil, cooking utensils, plastic eating utensils, 55-gallon trash bags, bug spray, pillow cases, 2-gallon Ziploc bags and hygiene items.
The Nazarene church and Kingsview school are located on 1850 Clark St., just behind North Bend Les Schwab. The phone numbers are 756-2004 for the church and 756-1411 for the school.
4-H leaders gather supplies for region
The Coos County 4-H junior leaders are gathering supplies for victims of Hurricane Katrina.
Supplies collected will be packed on Saturday, Oct. 22, and sent to Opelousas, La. Oct. 22 is Make a Difference Day, a day created by USA Weekend magazine to connect Americans in volunteer services across the country.
Working with the St. Landry-Evangeline United Way, the junior leaders have created a list of supplies needed for hurricane-affected youth. Items needed include school supplies, personal hygiene items, toys and winter uniform jackets. 4-H members will collect supplies at schools and the Oregon State University Extension Service office, 631 Alder St., Myrtle Point.
