Charleston residents are invited to a town hall meeting to discuss long-range plans for managing the public facilities here.

The Oregon International Port of Coos Bay is hosting the meeting from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, at the Oregon Institute of Marine Biology dining hall, 63466 Boat Basin Drive.

The discussion is being prompted by the port embarking on a new master planning process for development and management of its Charleston facilities, according to a press release. The facilities include the marina and launch ramp, the RV park and the shipyard. Port staff plan to outline the master plan and discuss options for moving the project forward.

The current plan to help guide management of the properties was adopted in the early 1990s. However, port officials say, a lot has changed over the past decade. The master plan will look at facilities and their conditions, users' needs and wants, changing market dynamics, operating procedures and costs, revenue sources and the agency's financial standing.

The port has several options in developing the plan, from having staff work up the details in-house to hiring a local or outside consultant to do the work.

The port's Charleston Advisory Committee will be expanded and those members, including merchants, OIMB representatives and community members, will help guide the process. The port intends to continue to hold public meetings and give interested people opportunities to comment and participate in planning, the port said.

This case begs the question: Why don't the proponents for the facts request or conduct their own investigation? One subject to disclosure. Finances, of all matters to a school district are easily tracked.
