Oregon Health & Science University medical student Jason Swagert is on rotation at Bay Clinic in Coos Bay with internist Ryan Petersen, M.D.

Swagert is from Portland. He attended Brigham Young University, majoring in violin performance and minoring in microbiology and chemistry. He served previous internships in family medicine, CT surgery, oncology surgery and urology, according to a Bay Area Hospital press release.

Medical students are sponsored by the Area Health Education Center of Southwest Oregon.

The center provides a stipend for gas and housing for the students while they serve their five-week rotation.

"I want to improve my diagnoses, abilities, sharpen my physical exam skills, gain experience, and enjoy getting to know new people," Swagert said of his rural rotation to the South Coast.

He has many interests outside of medicine including violin, chamber music, computers and computer building, racquetball, biking and fly fishing.
