One tall ship off shore

Tuesday, July 19, 2005 |
It's here. At least one tall ship.
Coos Bay officials are readying for the expected arrival of the sailing vessel R. Tucker Thompson today around noon at the Coos Bay City Docks. The vessel was reported offshore around 9 a.m. today.
Plans are ever-changing, but tall ship hosts are hoping possibly three tall ships stop for a rest in this week at Coos Bay. At press time, arrival times for the Mexican Navy's sail-training vessel Cuauhtemoc are and the tall ship Bill of Rights was unknown, but at least one more vessel is expected between now and Thursday.
Over the weekend, it was thought at least one of the ships might arrive too early, as soon as Monday night, leaving organizers to fear preparations would not be ready in time to host the vessel. But changing winds slowed progress. As of Monday afternoon, the Cuauhtemoc and the schooner R. Tucker Thompson were near Newport. The Bill of Rights was scheduled to set sail for Coos Bay this morning.
Organizers are planning entertainment and a welcome dinner on Thursday for the crews of whichever vessels might arrive between now and then. The ships are participating in the 2005 Tall Ships Challenge race down the Pacific Coast.
Should the Cuauhtemoc arrive, it is to anchor near Empire beside the shipping channel.
The R. Tucker Thompson and Bill of Rights are scheduled to dock at the Coos Bay City Docks.
