Thunder from the skies
Friday, June 10, 2005 11:02 AM PDT
The Wings of Freedom Tour stopped in North Bend on Thursday afternoon.
Called the backbones of American airpower during World War II, the Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress and the Consolidated B-24 Liberator, were heavy bomber aircraft. Thousands of American military personnel flew in the planes fighting valiantly in over enemy territory more than years ago. The B-17, in front, is one of only 10 flying examples of its type still flying today, and the B-24 is the last such model still flying American skies. These rare World War ll aircraft will be at the North Bend Municipal Airport until 1 p.m. today and are available for people to take close-up views for a small fee.
