Wish List is a new weekly feature in The World, which will highlight informational requests as well as needs and wants of area service organizations and providers and nonprofit groups.

Mentors needed

Youth Empowerment Solutions is challenging people to make a difference in their community by becoming a mentor. Mentors act as friends, coaches and trusted guides. For more information, those interested can contact Coos County Mentor Coordinator LeeAnn MacDonald at 297-5542.

Mystery artist sought

The Coos County Fair recently received a painting donated by Broadbent Grange No. 729, and the artist is a mystery.

The artwork depicts a scenic view of the Coquille River and contains advertising of more than 30 turn-of-the-century county businesses. To date, no record of who the artist might be has been found.

The painting is on display at the fairgrounds in the Oaks Pavilion.

Those who have any information as to who the artist might have been can call the fair office at 572-2002.

Volunteers sought

The Dune Fest Committee is seeking volunteers to assist with activities including pre-registration and registration during the event, participant check-in, venue clean-up and more.

Help is needed to make this event successful. For more information, those interested can stop by the Reedsport Chamber of Commerce office at 855 Highway 101, or call (541) 271-3495 between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

Buy a brick

The Coos Bay Firefighters Memorial Committee is continuing its "Buy-A-Brick" fund-raising and donation campaign.

The bricks will be used in the construction of a memorial honoring Coos Bay Fire Department Capt. Randy Carpenter and firefighters Chuck Hanners and Jeff Common who died in the line of duty while battling a fire at a truck and auto parts store on Nov. 25, 2002.

The memorial will be located in the courtyard in front of Coos Bay City Hall and will include a life-sized bronze statue of the three firefighters, a remembrance wall, 11 trees signifying the children left behind and three pathways constructed of engraved donor bricks.

Order forms for bricks can be obtained online at http://www.coosbayfirefightersmemorial.com; or during regular business hours at City Hall, 500 Central Ave., or either Coos Bay fire station, 150 S. Fourth St. and 189 S. Wall St. All donations are tax deductible. For more information or to obtain a form by mail, those interested can call 269-1191.

Uh...ok!?
I personally think this is a great idea. As a fan of target shooting I sometimes try and find somewhere in the woods somewhere to shoot and it's hard to find a place where it will be safe. This will help eliminate shot up signs and busted glass in the woods and on the back trails. Let's hurry and make this happen!

Well, that is a good example of the type of drivers there are around here. I have never seen so many people DISOBEY the law in my life. I have come close to getting hit from behind twice and I was STOPPED. There are a lot of bad drivers around here.

Very nice article, unfortunately pretty soon the morons are going to start blaming the rainfall on "global warming." Only morons believe global has anything to do with humanity, or humans can do anything about it. Imbeciles...all of 'em.
