Lakers take series after disputed call

Jason Reed drove home the winning run in the bottom of the tenth inning as Southwestern beat Gray's Harbor, 1-0, earning a series win at home.

Reed's single, off Gray's Harbor pitcher David Morgan, sent the Lakers' Ryan Sussenguth home. Sussenguth had reached base with a single off Morgan.

The Lakers (2-4) also won Saturday's game 2-1. Josh Wilson pitched a complete game, giving up six hits and striking out eight.

"We played much better and and more agressively than the first weekend (of the season," said Lakers head coach Corky Franklin. "Even though we didn't play as well as we can offensively, we still had a chance to win because of good pitching and defense."

The series win came after Friday's

controversial 4-1 loss, in which an apparent game-tying hit was taken away. Trailing 3-1 in the top of the bottom of the sixth with bases loaded, Austin Brushett hit a smoker to the wall and the bases cleared.

But Gray's Harbor appealed to the first base umpire, claiming Brushett had missed the bag. The appeal was upheld - drawing Franklin out of the dugout.

He was promptly ejected.

"I didn't even get to go out there," said Franklin. "It was pretty much ... it was bad."

Still, the Lakers were able to glean some positives. In Sunday's game, starter Evan Scegmiller tossed nine shutout innings before Reed's walk-off in the tenth.

"The players, and we've talked about this in practice, the players didn't let the umpires affect them this weekend," said Franklin. "I was more bothered by the umpires than they were."
