Beach cleanup coming soon

Spring is a time for new beginnings and that's just what organizers want for Oregon beaches in the annual Great Oregon Spring Beach Cleanup set to take place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 19.

Last spring, 4,800 volunteers statewide cleared 40 tons of trash at shorelines from the mouth of the Columbia River to Brookings.

Organizers can't estimate if this year's project will yield more trash, but as with every year, they expect plenty of work to do.

"I don't anticipate any shortage of material for volunteers to pick up," said Patty Terzian, Project Oregon program coordinator for SOLV.

Volunteers can check in at any one of the 42 coastal staging sites where beach captains will be stationed to hand out bags and guide operations.
