Barton chosen for airport board

Saturday, February 26, 2005 |
The newest board member for the Coos County Airport District is well acquainted with affairs at the North Bend Municipal Airport - from his days on the board of the airport's previous owner.
At the end of the district meeting Thursday in North Bend, the four incumbent board members unanimously chose Jon Barton to replace Mike Crow, an original member who resigned in January.
Barton was a commissioner for the Oregon International Port of Coos Bay from January 2001 until December 2003, when Gov. Ted Kulongoski refused to renew his term and brought in a new group of commissioners. Earlier, he served on the airport's Citizens Advisory Committee.
The port directed airport operations until 2003, when Coos County voters approved a taxing district to govern the airport.
Barton was one of seven applicants for the airport board position, which went vacant when Crow stepped down to tend to his son, Ryan, who was severely injured in a September car accident in Eugene.
Though the former port commissioner's term runs only through the May 17 election, he immediately focused on two goals: arranging funding to build a new passenger terminal and turning the airport's business development park into the district's prime moneymaker.
"I'm eager to see the business park be developed," Barton said immediately after his appointment. "Long-term revenue from the business park will hopefully ease the tax burden on this community."
