Mexico poised to allow out-of-country voting

SALEM (AP) - Mexican citizens in Oregon and across the country soon may be able to vote in their homeland without returning there to do it.

There are at least 10 million Mexican citizens in this country. Oregon is home to some 250,000 Hispanics, about 9 percent of its population, most of them from Mexico.

While many have lived here for years, they retain a stake in what happens south of the border. Nationwide, Mexicans send home some $13 billion a year to family members.

Mexico's congress is expected to approve the necessary legislation soon after it reconvenes this week.
