Bone marrow screening set

Organizers of "Operation Resolution" are hoping at least 240 people line up to walk through the doors at Coos Bay's Red Lion Hotel on Saturday to volunteer as potential bone marrow donors.
The Coos Bay-North Bend Rotary Club is sponsoring the screening from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in hopes of finding a marrow match for two local cancer patients. The activity is the Rotary's response to the illnesses of Spence Erickson and Jose Sermeno. Erickson, a Rotary member, has been treated for leukemia since 2003 and is undergoing chemotherapy at Oregon Health & Science University Hospital in Portland. Sermeno, a Red Lion employee in Coos Bay, was diagnosed in August with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.
Donation candidates will not provide marrow for any specific patient but will be added to a list kept by the National Marrow Donation Program. Participants in the drive must be between 18 and 60 years old and will sign a consent form to join the national registry, fill out a short health questionnaire, undergo a screening interview and give a small blood sample.
No one will be charged for participating in the screening to be held at the hotel at 1313 N. Bayshore Drive, Coos Bay.
