Chamber fetes top businesses, boosters

The good times rolled Saturday night in North Bend, as did the acolades to Bay Area residents and businesses who work to stand out for community service.

The Bay Area Chamber of Commerce's annual Awards Banquet brought in more than 200 people to the event at The Mill Casino-Hotel.

Century 21 Best Realty and broker Sam Roth walked away with the Business of the Year Award for exhibiting excellence in products and customer service. More than that, the award recognized the business for contributing time, manpower and resources to community improvement projects, and making significant contributions toward a healthy economy through excellence in employee relations and training.

It was Jennifer Bream, of Brian Bream Screw Machines, who garnered the Chamber Member of the Year Award for serving on the Leadership Coos steering and tourism committees, chamber board of directors. She also was noted for volunteerism in schools and tireless work for the chamber.

The theme of Saturday's event, which was emceed by Bay Area Hospital's Tim Salisbury and The World Publisher Greg Stevens, was "25 years - Let the Good Times Roll."

The evening included other awards. Fran Worthen and Steve Greif presented the Prefontaine Memorial Committee Athletic Award to outstanding athlete Brian Wuethrich. Other awards were presented by 2005 Chamber President Dick Leshley, Vice President Johanna Dillard and Executive Director Shirley Liberante.

The Positivity Award went to the Coquille Economic Development Corporation for its committment to diversity and long-term viability for each of its business ventures, improving the community and contributing to the area's infrastructure and employment.

R.C. Hall, of R.C. Hall Photography, earned the Volunteer of the Year Award. He is active with the Tourism Committee and in promotion of the area. He also has been working with the Oregon Film Commission to help it find opportunities here. He was one of the first in the state to get information on the state's Brand Oregon Web site about Coos Bay, North Bend and Charleston, as well as providing all the photographs, for the past two years, for the Chamber Community Profile & Business Directory.

Citizen of the Year Award went to Wayne Schrunk, of Wayne Schrunk Construction. Schrunk is active in the North Bend Downtown Association, is a member of the North Bend Planning Commission and has refurbished buildings in the city's downtown. He also teaches classes on starting a successful small business and supports many charitable businesses.

The Four Star Customer Service Award recipients (nominated by their customers) were: Checkerberry's, Coos Bay Toyota, Engles Furniture, High Tide Restaurant, Honda World, KCBY-TV, The Mill Casino-Hotel, Oyster Cove Pub & Grill and Umpqua Bank's Coos Bay store.

Twenty-five year chamber members recognized were: Action Trophies, Bay Area Hospital, Bay Cities Ambulance, Bay Printers, Berger's Top Service Body Shop, Scoville & Reiber CPA's, Captains Choice Restaurant, Captain John's Motel, Century 21 Best Realty, Chambers Plumbing & Heating, Chuck's Seafoods, Coldwell Banker, Coos Bay-North Bend Water Board, Coos Bay Sanitary Service, Coos County Court House, Coos Grange Supply, Courtesy Pontiac, Oregon Employment Department, Farr's True Value Hardware, Georgia Pacific, Gib's RV's, HGE Inc., Hilltop House, Huggins Insurance, JC Penney, Johnson Rock Products, KBBR/KHSN Radio (Bicoastal Media), KCBY-TV, Kings Table, Les Schwab Tires, Marshfield Bargain House, McDonalds Restaurants, McKays Markets, Modern Floors, Nasburg Insurance, North Bend Lanes, Ocean Terminals, The Oregon Connection, Pacific Power, Oregon International Port of Coos Bay, Red Lion Hotel, Roseburg Lumber, Safeway Stores, Salvation Army, Sause Bros. Recognition also was given to past and present board members, past and present Leadership Coos participants and the current steering committee, and the visitor center coordinator and volunteers and chamber staff.
