Another quake rocks the coast

Wednesday, December 15, 2004 |
Well, sort of...
A relatively shallow earthquake, about 6.5 miles deep, shook the ground 165 miles west of Coos Bay Monday.
Didn't feel it? It's not surprising - the temblor's magnitude was only 4.5 and it happened at 6:51 a.m., about the time most folks are moving around and getting ready for work or school.
Unlike other earthquakes, this one so far hasn't had any aftershocks. Other, more dramatic quakes have been rocking the rest of the world.
So far in 2004, according to the U.S. Geologic Survey, the largest earthquake was a magnitude 7.5 earthquake on Nov. 11 in Kepulauan Alor, Indonesia, that caused 27 deaths. The deadliest was a 6.4 near the north coast of Morocco on Feb. 24; 628 people were missing and presumed dead after that temblor.
On average, 18 major earthquakes of magnitude 7.0 to 7.9 and onegreat earthquake (8.0 or higher) occur annually worldwide.
