The Oregon Department of Fish & Wildlife will hold four regional meetings in October on the sport rockfish closure.

"We want to find ways to regulate the fishery so we can stretch out the season and still meet the new federal harvest caps for 2005," Patty Burke, ODFW marine resources program manager, said in a press release. "At these meetings we hope to find ways to improve communication about this important sport fishery to the public."

Locally, a meeting is scheduled at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 12, at The Best Western Inn at Face Rock, 3225 Beach Loop Road, Bandon. Another meeting is planned at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 11, at The Best Western Brookings Inn, U.S. Highway 101 North.

Also, the Pacific Fishery Management Council has advisory panels and times open to the public to hear concerns about potential fishing regulations. Its Web site is http://www.pcouncil.org, and identifies all the issues the council is considering, when the meetings are and who to talk to about specific issues. The council's address is 7700 N.E. Ambassador Place, Suite 200, Portland, OR 97220-1384. The toll-free number is (866) 806-7204 and the fax number is (503) 820-2299.
