Stuntzner-Gibson hits top 10
Max Stuntzner-Gibson placed in the top 10 in six different events to highlight the efforts of four Bay Area swimmers who competed at the recent Oregon 10-and-under State Championships in Albany.
The athletes participated as unattached swimmers, not affiliated with any team.
Stuntzner-Gibson, 9, finished fourth in the 200 individual medley, 50 butterfly and 100 freestyle; fifth in the 50 freestyle; seventh in the 200 freestyle and 10th in the 50 breaststroke.
The other swimmers who made the trip were Karl Stuntnzer-Gibson, Shaylyn Brownell and McKayla Weston.
Their results are listed in today's Community Scoreboard.
New event at speedway
The Coos Bay International Speedway will host a sand drag competition for the first time on Aug. 7.
The event will coincide with tuff trucks and mini stocks competitions at the facility, located on Highway 42 about eight miles southeast of Coos Bay.
Gates open at 5:30 p.m. and the action starts at 7:30 p.m. General admission is $8 for adults and $4 for children 7 through 12.
The South Coast Drag Racing Association will host races at the speedway on the weekend of July 30-Aug. 1.
Street legal races will be held on July 30, starting at 6:30 p.m., while Summit E.T. Series and junior dragster races will be held the other two days. Time trials begin at 10 a.m. and eliminations at 1 p.m.

Speedway officials also are gearing up for their big "Crash and Bash" event on Aug. 21.

State Games bowling
Several SouthCoast bowlers won medals at the recent State Games competition at Park Lanes in Hillsboro.
Three local residents won gold medals - Nikki Todd in the girls 9-11 division, Carol Meischner in the women's 35-and-under competition and Bobby Femling in the boys 15-and-over scratch division.
Two more won silver medals - Brian Mattecheck in the boys 9-11 scratch competition and Nora Bailey in the women's 65-and-over division. Bronze medals were won by Alex Hensley in the men's 35-and-under division, Kitty Russell in the 65-and-over scratch division and Femling in the boys 15-and-over division.

Gymnastics camp
The final SeaBreeze camp of the summer is week two of Gymnastics Camp on Aug. 2-6.
This camp is being offered to boys and girls in grades 1-8 and runs from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Gymnastics Plus facility on Pennsylvania Avenue in Coos Bay (the old Englewood School). It will teach the fundamentals of balance beam, floor exercises, trampoline moves, beginning stunts and the importance of properly warming up and strecthing. The camp will help with balance and coordination skills as well.
The fee is $45 with a current Boys & Girls Club membership and includes a T-shirt. All non-members must pay a $15 membership fee. Registration may be done at the Club office at 3333 Walnut Ave. or the morning of the camp at 1400 Pennsylvania Ave. in Coos Bay.

DARE tourney
The 11th-annual Coquille DARE golf tournament will be held at the Coquille Valley Elks Lodge on Aug. 14.
The event will tee off at 9 a.m. and is played in a four-person scramble format. The entry fee is $30 per person and includes lunch, green fees and raffle and door prizes.

Dawgleg Scramble
The North Bend Booster Club will host its ninth-annual Dawgleg Scramble golf tournament on Sunday, Aug. 15, starting at 8 a.m. at Kentuck Golf Course.
The cost to participate is $160 per four-person team ($40 per individual), and includes green fees, caddies, a barbecue lunch with beverages, player gifts and raffle tickets.
