PINE GROVE (AP) - A fire sparked Sunday blew up to cover an estimated 800 acres of heavy timberland on the north side of the Warm Springs Indian Reservation, a spokesman with the Northwest Interagency Coordination Center in Portland said.

The fire was burning about 10 miles from the tiny community of Pine Grove, near Mount Wilson, in central Oregon, said spokesman Marc Hollen. The community was not currently being threatened by the fire.

"It was just an acre when the first call came in, but now it has a column that you can see from PDX (Portland International Airport), 100 miles away," Hollen said.

A type two management team capable of handling a complex of fires has been assigned to the fire, which was named the Log Springs fire, Hollen said.

"The resources are being assembled. There's local initial attack forces working on it right now but we're getting larger crews assembled," said spokesman Roger Peterson.

Meanwhile, The Oregon Department of Forestry was working on seven fires in southern Oregon after more than 100 lightning strikes Saturday night. The largest was three-quarters of an acre near Pilot Rock.

On Saturday, a grass fire burned ten acres northwest of Myrtle Creek. About 50 firefighters from Douglas Forest Protective Association and Myrtle Creek, Tri City and Canyonville South Umpqua fire departments fought the fire with 13 engines, two helicopters and two bulldozers.

No structures were threatened and no injuries occurred. The cause of the fire was under investigation.
