LAKEVIEW (AP) - A magnitude 4.2 earthquake rattled towns in extreme Northern California and Oregon Thursday, attracting a lot of notice but causing no reported injuries or major damage.

The temblor struck at 1:26 p.m. at a depth of 3.1 miles and was centered six miles northeast of Lakeview, about 17 miles from the California border. A 4.4 magnitude earthquake hit the same area on June 30.

Eight aftershocks, the largest measuring 2.4 magnitude, followed Thursday afternoon's quake and the region also experienced several warning tremors in the hours leading up to it.

"A four is big enough that people felt it," said Leslie Gordon, a geologist at the U.S. Geological Survey in Menlo Park, Calif.

Although the agency characterized the earthquake as "light," some of the 42 people who reported feeling it on the agency's Web site described the shaking as "moderate."
