Rupp takes Pre's record in 3,000

PORTLAND - Runner Galen Rupp broke the national prep record in the 3,000 meters at a meet in Richmond, British Columbia.
Rupp, who attended Portland's Central Catholic, also met his goal of breaking Oregon track legend Steve Prefontaine's longstanding state high school record.
Rupp finished the Review Kajacks International 3,000 in 8:03.67.
His mark topped the national record of 8:05.8 set by John Trautmann of Monroe-Woodbury (New York) High School at the Penn Relays in 1986.
Prefontaine, who died in a car accident in Eugene in 1975, held the state record of 8:08, set while he was a student at Marshfield High School in 1969.
"I was putting a lot of pressure on myself to get that record," Rupp told The Oregonian. "It was the one thing I wanted this season more than anything else. It was No. 1 on my list."
Rupp placed third in Wednesday's event for elite runners. David Galvan of Mexico won the race in 7:57.09.
Rupp had been scheduled to run last Saturday in the Bowerman Mile race at the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene, but had to pull out of that event - won by Alan Webb - because of a cold.
"I'm very excited," Rupp said. "But I know I'm still not 100 percent."
Rupp will run this weekend in the USA Track and Field Junior Nationals in College Station, Texas. If he is among the top finishers, will go to the World Junior Championships in Grosseto, Italy, July 13-18.
