One of the most successful wrestling coaches in recent years on the South Coast will try to turn around Coquille High School's football program.

The Coquille School Board approved the hire of John Breuer as the team's new head coach this week.

"I'm really excited about it," said Breuer, who has been the head wrestling coach since 1991, leading the Red Devils to 10 district titles and several state trophies for top-four finishes.

Breuer has been around the Coquille football program since 1988, helping for many years as a trainer and volunteer assistant.

He knows he faces an uphill battle trying to build a winning team in a program that hasn't had a winning season under any of the past three head coaches.

"It's going to take time to build it," Breuer said.

He was excited though, when 80 kids signed a sheet saying they were interested in going out for the team in the fall. Breuer has started opening the school's weight room from 5 to 7 p.m. on Mondays through Thursdays and had a strong turnout, he said.

The head coaching job came open when last year's coach, Steve Hall, had a change in his job that would keep him from having enough time to remain as coach, said retiring Coquille athletic director Terry Martell.

Because he is retiring, Martell didn't sit in on the selection committee that picked Breuer. That group was headed up by the school's new athletic director, Brad Sperry.

"He came into that interview very well prepared," said Sperry. "He brought us in a playbook and had his philosophy of coaching and his practice philosophies outlined.

"He's got experience. He's got enthusiasm. He really wanted the job."

Sperry added that Breuer has been a big supporter of the athletic program.

"The committee felt that this was his year," Sperry said. "The things he said were right on."

Sperry said Breuer also has a strong reputation.

"Everything I've heard about his coaching style, his philosophy for the kids, I like," he said. "He has that in perspective. In today's society, that is very important."

Breuer's hire was the first in Coquille for Sperry, who is coming to the South Coast after a one-year stint as a vice principal at Hermiston High School.

"It's green, it's cool, it's near the coast," Sperry said of Coquille. "I've always wanted, ever since I moved to Oregon 20 years ago, to live and work along the coast."

Sperry spent 15 years as a teacher, including 13 at Estacada High School. He has been a head coach for football, basketball, track and field, golf and tennis and had a variety of assistant coaching positions. He also held administrative positions in the Madras and Detroit Lake school districts.

He has spent most of his time working in schools larger than Coquille.

"I'm looking forward to the ambiance of the smaller school and getting to know the kids a little more, and definitely the staff and the community," he said.
