SALEM (AP) - Senate President Peter Courtney said Friday the Senate won't convene a special session Tuesday even though the House plans to move ahead with one to consider a new state spending limit.

Courtney said a majority of Senate members responding to a poll indicated they didn't want to meet, and that calling a session would be futile because there's no agreement on any fiscal reforms at this point.

"The Legislature is not prepared to come into a special session," Courtney said. "It is in the best interests of Oregonians not to come into session."

The Salem Democrat's announcement means that next week's special session - if it can even be called that - will be a one-sided affair with just the House going through the motions of convening a session.

House Speaker Karen Minnis has instructed House members to return to Salem for a special session beginning at 9 a.m. Tuesday to begin consideration of a proposed ballot measure to limit spending.

Her chief of staff, Gary Wilhelms, said Courtney's announcement late Friday doesn't change anything.

"We'll just go at it Tuesday morning, do what we do, and let the public be the judge," Wilhelms said.
