CAVE JUNCTION (AP) - A teenager from Cave Junction is facing animal abuse charges after his confession that he killed Speckles, the celebrity hen and mascot of a Murphy supermarket.

Adam Abbey, 18, told a deputy that he went to the local Ray Food Place's on Saturday night to use a pay phone. He said he wrung Speckles' neck because the chicken "had a limp, and he wanted to put it out of its misery," said Josephine County sheriff's Lt. Lee Harman.

Speckles first made news in March, when Williams resident Nick Gombos was arrested after taking Speckles from the supermarket. Gombos assumed the chicken had been abandoned, and made plans to keep him.

Eventually, Gombos was charged with third-degree theft, as well as interfering with an officer, since he allegedly refused to return Speckles to police.

Abbey has been cited on a charge of aggravated animal abuse.

Harman said deputies did not arrest Abbey because he has no prior criminal record and cooperated with police investigating Speckles death.

Is this suppose to be a surprise to everyone? If it is then I am flabergasted because all we need to do is look that the polls. The Ironic think about this is supposidly over 50% of the votes were in favor of Bush during the 2004 election. As Connie Frances sang sometime ago; Who's Sorry Now?!?!?
