€ 97 years ago (April 27, 1907, Coos Bay Times) - The telephone line between Coos Bay and the "little white city" Gardiner was complete, marking the first means of communication by anything other than boat. Gardiner businessmen could contact anyone on the coast using the Pacific Telephone and Telegraphic line. Sunset Lodge No. 51, IOOF, celebrated its 88th anniversary with 200 partaking in a feast with music by an Irish orchestra. The lodge was instituted March 24, 1875 by Henry G. € 74 years ago (April 28, 1930, Coos Bay Times) - Thousands of residents went outdoors to watch a solar eclipse. With 93 percent totality, the eclipse occurred at 11:12 a.m. for 1 3/10 seconds. "... One sun and one moon met and passed as they have met and passed countless times before, and our eyes lifted in wonder." The next eclipse would be in 1979. Census estimates were being returned for the Bay Area. Since 1920, North Bend's population increased from 3,269 to 4,001; Lakeside declined, 480 to 92; and Eastside had increased, 336 to 554. € 53 years ago (May 1, 1951, Coos Bay Times) - A test of the Coos Bay air raid warning system was not satisfactory, according to city officials, largely due to windy conditions. € 28 years ago (April 29, 1976, The World) - The Justice Department announced that after a five-month investigation, the FBI was not involved "in any way" in Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s assassination in 1968.
