Hoops, haircuts to benefit children's causes

Saturday, April 03, 2004 |
The Reedsport Police Department is conducting an officers' hair-cutting contest to benefit a Portland children's hospital, culminating in an exhibition basketball game between a squad of officers and the barnstorming Harlem Crowns team.
Police officers and dispatchers are soliciting donations from city residents and businesses to be given to Doernbecher Children's Hospital in Portland. For each $500 raised, one officer will have his or her head shaved.
According to Police Chief Bob Gross, the fund-raiser is a show of gratitude to the hospital, where 15 Reedsport residents were treated in 2002 and 2003.
Reedsport's team, joined by members of the Douglas County Sheriff's Office and Oregon State Police, will form a team to play against the Harlem Crowns at 7 p.m. April 16 at Reedsport Junior-Senior High School.
Tickets are $5 in advance and $6 on game night, and can be purchased from members of Project Graduation and the Reedsport Task Force on Alcohol, Drugs and Youth, which will receive the proceeds from the game. Tickets also are available at police headquarters and the Family Resource Center.
