A panel of federal judges heard arguments (Jan. 15) on why the federal government should not be allowed to build a permanent nuclear waste repository in Nevada. The judges should turn those arguments aside and let the facility proceed.

The government has sited and designed that facility for the permanent storage of spent reactor fuel and waste from nuclear weapons. It will be built to hold the waste without any leakage for 10,000 years.

Currently, that waste is stored at 17 locations around the country, none of which was specifically designed and built for the long-term storage of this dangerous waste.

We know that Yucca Mountain can hold this material safely for 10,000 years. We know the 17 locations where it is stored now will not. Why not establish the facility and move the material where it will be safe?

Ten thousand years is enough to begin with. If necessary, we can build a new facility in 9,000 years.
