GRANTS PASS (AP) - The Powell Creek fire near Williams was contained Tuesday as investigators began looking into reports that a chain saw might have started it.

The fire, which started Monday, caused the temporary evacuation of 28 homes and threatened another 45. On July 1, the Oregon Department of Forestry prohibited chain saw use in Jackson and Josephine counties between 1 p.m. and 8 p.m. Similar restrictions are in place in eastern and central Oregon.

Elsewhere in Oregon, some firefighters at the 906-acre Link fire 10 miles northwest of Sisters began to mop up the cool perimeter, using water to douse hot spots within 100 feet of the fire line. Others worked on the hot side of the fire for a containment line that was expected to be finished on Saturday.

A barrage of 2,500 lightning strikes from a storm that moved across the state on Monday night and Tuesday ignited 14 small fires in southeastern Oregon and 27 in northeastern Oregon.
