PORTLAND (AP) - The Archdiocese of Portland has settled sexual abuse lawsuits with about 65 people who alleged that they were molested as children by Catholic priests or clergymen.

Lawyers for the plaintiffs told a Multnomah County judge about the settlements on Friday, but would not disclose the dollar figures involved.

"I thought it was well worth doing," said Kelly Clark, a Portland attorney representing more than 20 plaintiffs in the mediation.

"A lot of damaged people got closure."

Catholic officials also described the mediation as a success.

"These cases are difficult for all concerned, and we are pleased that so many were resolved without trial," officials of the Archdiocese of Portland said in a written statement.

"The Archdiocese has only limited resources, and we want to compensate as many deserving plaintiffs as possible. Settling means that we can use what we have to pay individual claimants, rather than attorneys and others to prepare for trial," the statement read.

Still, there are still unresolved cases involving 35 more plaintiffs, the Archdiocese of Portland, Mount Angel Abbey and other religious institutions.

In addition, lawsuits filed by nearly two dozen plaintiffs against the Diocese of Baker, were not part of the negotiations and are unresolved.

The next step will be motions that will determine how many of the remaining cases go to trial.

Defendants will attempt to get some cases dismissed because of the statute of limitations, and there are questions about whether punitive damages will apply to the cases.

Depending on the rulings, many of the remaining cases could be settled before trial, the lawyers told Judge John A. Whittmayer.

Since December 1999, about 160 people have filed lawsuits in Oregon claiming they were molested by Catholic priests and other church officials.

"Before recording the ad, French signed an affidavit that said: 'I am able to swear, as I do hereby swear, that all facts and statements contained in this affidavit are true and correct and within my personal knowledge and belief.'"

Andrew Kramer, AP, August 24, 2004

Just for the historical record, of all the shoddy attacks leveled at the Swiftvets, this article represents, perhaps, "journalism" at its worst.

Andrew Kramer of the AP either malevolently or ignorantly misquotes Al French's affidavit. The actual quote from the affidavit reads...

"I am able to swear, as I do hereby swear, that all facts and statements contained in this affidavit are true and correct and within my personal knowledge OR belief."

That single, misquoted word was foundational to the specious allegation that Mr. French "lied" in his affidavit...since he acknowledged other than first-hand knowledge in support of his sworn testimony. Mr. French's actual words rendered that allegation moot. Nor was Mr. Kramer unique in his shoddy reporting...

Is this suppose to be a surprise to everyone? If it is then I am flabergasted because all we need to do is look that the polls. The Ironic think about this is supposidly over 50% of the votes were in favor of Bush during the 2004 election. As Connie Frances sang sometime ago; Who's Sorry Now?!?!?
