Two people were killed in unrelated accidents along the South Coast over the weekend.

A California man died and three others were injured in a two-vehicle crash that closed State Highway 38 for approximately an hour Saturday afternoon.

According to Oregon State Police Sgt. Mike Stupfel, Aaron Weld, 18, of La Canada, Calif., was driving a 1999 Mitsubishi Eclipse eastbound on Highway 38 near milepost 10 (10 miles east of Reedsport) at 3:45 p.m., when the car crossed the center line. The Mitsubishi struck a 2001 Toyota Tacoma pickup truck, heading westbound, head on. The Toyota was towing a flatbed trailer loaded with two 4-wheelers.

The driver of the pickup, Johnie McCracken, 52, of Dillard and his passenger, Steven Crawford, 57, of Sutherlin, were taken to Lower Umpqua Hospital in Reedsport, where they were treated overnight for undisclosed injuries and released Sunday.

A passenger in the Mitsubishi, Matthew Hays, 16, of North Bend, was treated for a broken left arm and released from Lower Umpqua Hospital on Saturday afternoon, according to a hospital spokeswoman.

According to OSP, Weld was not wearing a seat belt. Airbags deployed in both vehicles.

OSP personnel are investigating whether alcohol was factor in the crash, Stupfel said.

Members of OSP in Coos Bay and Roseburg, as well as members of the Douglas County Sheriff's Office and Reedsport Police Department assisted in the investigation of the crash, which is continuing.

The Reedsport and Scottsburg Fire Departments and the Oregon Department of Transportation provided traffic control throughout the on-scene investigation.

Man arrested after Sunday crash

On Sunday, a Eugene woman was killed and a Days Creek man was arrested on charges of reckless driving and criminally negligent homicide in an afternoon head-on collision on U.S. Highway 101 near milepost 216.

The crash occurred along an area known as Winchester Bay hill, three miles south of Reedsport about 3:10 p.m.

According to an OSP press release, a red 1982 Chevrolet pickup truck driven by Bradley W. Bruessel, 43, was heading northbound down a 6 percent grade at 35 to 40 miles per hour. Bruessel was towing a 25-foot metal flatbed trailer, which investigators believe began to sway from side to side.

The pickup and trailer eventually crossed the center line and jack-knifed into the path of a light blue 1994 Ford Tempo that was heading southbound on the highway.

Investigators said the trailer collided with a Ford Tempo driven by 20-year-old Angela N. Gregory of Eugene. The trailer then separated from the truck. Gregory was pronounced dead at the scene.

The accident closed the highway to all but one lane for nearly four hours. The initial cause of the crash was suspected to be improper loading of the towed trailer and possible equipment failure, OSP Sgt. Mike Stupfel said.

Bruessel, who was not hurt, was later arrested by Reedsport Police and charged with one count of reckless driving and one count of criminally negligent homicide. He was taken to the Reedsport jail and was scheduled to be taken to the Douglas County jail, according to Reedsport Police.

OSP in Coos Bay is investigating whether alcohol was a factor in the accident. OSP is being assisted in the investigation by members of the Douglas and Coos county sheriff's offices, Reedsport Police, Winchester Bay Fire Department, the Douglas County District Attorney and Oregon Department of Transportation.
