Bullet hits classroom, no injuries

PORTLAND -- A fight near an elementary school could have turned deadly Tuesday after a bullet fired by one of the participants crashed through a classroom window, authorities said.
The bullet struck a blind and fell to the floor, frightening 10 children in a portable classroom at Bridger Elementary School in southeast Portland. Another 150 children were enjoying a rare sunny day on the playground, less than half a block from where the fight happened, said Sgt. Brian Schmautz, spokesman for the Portland Bureau of Police.
"Unless some kid had his face to the window, it wasn't that close," Schmautz said. Nevertheless, the children and their teacher hit the floor.
A second bullet struck the car of someone involved in the dispute, and a total of four or five shots were fired, according to police. Neither the bullets nor the fight caused any injuries, Schmautz said.
Montez T. Taylor, 20, of Portland was arrested on charges of attempted assault and unlawful use of a weapon. He was being interviewed late Tuesday and could face additional charges, Schmautz said.
No gun had been recovered by late Tuesday, Schmautz said.
The fight involved roughly a dozen people from two groups, who had been fighting before Tuesday, Schmautz said. Though some witnesses described the incident as gang-related, authorities would not confirm that.
After the shots were fired, school officials quickly accounted for all the children and the school was locked down. Some parents, however, rushed to take their children home.
Keith Nottage, whose two sons attend the school, told The Oregonian that the shooting "unnerved" him. But he said he can't protect his kids at all times.
"A stray bullet is a stray bullet," he said. "It has no rhyme or reason."
