Teens headed to wreck site in roll-over accident

Wednesday, May 14, 2003 |
Three days after two teen-agers were killed following a car accident about 11 miles east of Coquille, a strikingly similar accident occurred Tuesday, involving five Coos Bay teen-agers, who were driving to the site to leave flowers.
According to Lt. Larry Leader of the Coos County Sheriff's Office, four boys and one girl were heading to site at about 1:10 p.m., when their four-door 2000 Chevrolet sedan left the road at 94621 Sumner Lane. The car hit a tree and overturned.
The driver of the car, Christopher W. Jones, 18, of Coos Bay, was cited on charges of having no operator's license, no insurance and careless driving along with four counts of recklessly endangering another.
Neither Jones nor his passengers were injured in the roll-over, Leader said.
"Apparently, there are some lessons being missed here," Leader said, referring to the fatal accident Sunday morning in which a SUV left the road, went down an embankment and hit a tree, killing two of the five Marshfield High School students who were in the car and leaving the three others with minor injuries.
Funeral services for the victims, 15-year-old Marissa Cuiriz, and 16-year-old Danny Lowry, are being held this week.
"The road is a little curvy out there but if it's curvy, you drive slower," Leader said. "At least in this accident everybody was wearing their seat belts because none of them was injured, which is a good thing."
Police are still seeking information about reports of an underage drinking party in the Middle Creek area Saturday night. They are asking anyone with information about the party to contact the Coos County Sheriff's office at 396-2106.
