Early last week, a piece of steel fell from the top of the railroad swing bridge over Coos Bay and damaged gears, shaft and electrical gear on the bridge, making it inoperable.

A small tugboat has been used to swing the bridge open and closed when needed by the Central Oregon and Pacific Railroad, with repairs estimated to cost about $25,000. It was hoped to be repaired earlier in the week, but the latest estimate is for repairs to be made today.
