Students compete in knowledge contests

Middle school students from all over the South Coast competed in several Knowledge Bowl tournaments recently.

Here are the results:

Sixth grade

Knowledge Bowl tournament where teams competed in a total of seven games on Dec. 4.

First place -- North Bend Middle School (940 points), coached by Bill Berrian and volunteer Adrienne Lance. Team consists Kyle Beechly, Trevor Berrian, Daniel Flora, William Fowler, Kris Freeman, Michael Johnson, Cayla Newman and Rebecca Gatlin

Second place -- Millicoma Intermediate School (930), coached by Becky Lancaster. Team consists Damien Molina, Geoff VanPulliam, Jordan Rice, Brenna Vicerey, Corey Downs, Stacey Smith, Cody Millican and Jordan Shepard.

Third place -- Harbor Lights Middle School (870), coached by Shirley VanLueven. Team consisting Alex Sylvester, Gerald Davis, Briana Valentine, Jordan Pullen, Kody Lawrence, Michael Milner, Gabrielle Josephson and Ayla-Mae Vedder.

Fourth place -- Azalea Middle School (840), coached by Charlotte Heatherly. Team consists Ryan Gardner, Erika Cleary, Sara Savage, Cecil Edel, Brian Seamons, Katie Voigt, Mark Stevens and Chloe Rosenthal.

Fifth place -- Riley Creek Middle School (760), coached by Ralph Scott. Team consists Joey Wegner, Quinn Harrison, Max Taylor, Rendall MacLaurie, Kate Harrison, Elissa Hawkins, Julia Denning and Jacob VanProoyen.

Sixth place -- Millicoma Intermediate School - Team 2 (750), coached by Becky Lancaster. Team consists Shelby Paulson, Tanner Smith, David Perrin, Annelise Simonson, Richard VanNatta, Chloe Danielson, Emily Nauman and Paxson Bachus.

Seventh place -- W.F. Jewett Middle School (610), coached by Ruth Prater and peer coaches Justin Fulps and Patrick Harris. Team consists Camille Tisler, Cody Savey, Dima Orel, Dan Barnum, Ashley White, Windey Dorsey, Tailor Nun and Chelsea Hitchcock.

Eighth place -- Coquille Valley Middle School (590), coached by Alea Nortness. Team consists Nikki Steeves, James Brown, Steve Dery, Breanne Manley, Trevor Waldien, Blake Holmes, Caleb Kupersmith, Sean Andy and German Ferrer.

Seventh grade

Knowledge Bowl tournament where teams competed in a total of eight games on Nov. 13.

First place -- W.F. Jewett Middle School (1,460 points), coached by Ruth Prater. Team consists Brian Law, Chase Landry, Gary Hillsman, Devon Orr, Kelly McLain, Paige Feller and Katie Corcoran.

Second place -- Azalea Middle School (1,310), coached by Charlotte Heatherly. Team consists Ryan Bond, Riley Curtis, Justine Dodgen, Jesica Haglund, Justin Konkel, Tony Musser, Alec Rosenthal, Skyler Shuford and Andrew Troendle.

Third place -- North Bend Middle School (1,020), coached by Bill Berrian. Team consists Alex Clark, Adrienne Scavera, Alina Stevenson, Zia Burris, Jessica Parker, Nancy Sorenson, Jessianne Heley and Erika Schultz.

Fourth place -- Sunset Middle School - Team 2 (980), coached by Les Willett and parent volunteer Crickett Soules. Team consists Becky Soules, Zach Sevy, Keneta Dietz, Alex Walker, John Parrish, Kacy Neal, Sarah Consenz, Jeff Stephens and Falicia Brown.

Fifth place -- Coquille Valley Middle School (950), coached by Alea Nortness. Team consists Max Fletcher, Michael Dieu, Cody Waddington, Dawn Eversz and Ryan Cook. The team also had three sixth-graders -- Francesca Frasier, Daniel Muntifering and Luke Hashberger -- on it.

Sixth place -- Harbor Lights Middle School (920), coached by Christine Moehring. Team consists Patricia Pepper, Crain Minkler, Ross Kiefer, Chase Higley, Ian Frank, Danielle Dyer, Mary Lane and Avery Richards.

Seventh place -- Blanco Middle School (720), coached by Bob Lemerande. Team consists Jody Lang, John Swenson, Natalie Manning, Adeline Maddi, Wesley Smith, Tiffany Fanning and Samantha Barnes.

Eighth place -- Sunset Middle School - Team 1 (720), coached by Les Willett and parent volunteer Crickett Soules. Team consists Sidney Durette, Teka Steward, Zach Jones, Jonathon Nanninga, Gatlan Giorgis, Brendan Day, Sam Reynolds, Natasha Sherwood and Tara Ustica.

Ninth place -- Riley Creek Middle School (550), coached by Ralph Scott. Team consists of Leland Snook and Lucy Williame.

Eighth grade

Knowledge Bowl tournament where teams competed in a total of eight games on Nov. 20.

First place -- W.F. Jewett Middle School (1,340 points), coached by Ruth Prater. Team consists Russ Johnson, Patrick Harris, Andrea Campbell, Justin Fulps, Josh Savey, Jesse Barnum, Jeremy Spencer and Jared Mast.

Second place -- Sunset Middle School - Team 2 (1,160), coached by Les Willett and parent volunteers Don and ReneŽ Blom. Team consists Sam Robb, Steve Mann, John Buchanon, David Young and AJ Harrison.

Third place -- Riley Creek Middle School (1,050), coached by Ralph Scott. Team consists Tanner Mathison, Alexa Carey, Shiloh O'Connor, Jill Owen, Danielle Hilton, Sheila VanProoyen and Savannah Boice.

Fourth place -- Harbor Lights Middle School (1,040), coached by Christine Moehring. Team consists Dustin Culver, Kyle Small, Bess Goddard, Hollie Lemerande, Melissa Berg, Jessica Freitag, Dylan DoVale, Kristen Doffing, Erika Smith and Josh Youravish.

Fifth place -- Sunset Middle School - Team 1 (970), coached by Les Willett and parent volunteers Don and ReneŽ Blom. Team consists Bunny Lee, Hank Fields, Joshua Hodges and Ben Inokuchi.

Sixth place -- Coquille Valley Middle School (960), coached by Alea Nortness. Team consists Jett Cannon, Ed Eschler, Jessica Tucker, Nicole Blodgett, Richie Bradley, Chris Williams, Nick Mills and Josh Mikacevich.

Seventh place -- Sunset Middle School - Team 3 (920), coached by Les Willett and parent volunteers Don and ReneŽ Blom. Team consists Evan Blom, Kayla Estop, Chris Gaunt, Tara Scott and Robert Marchant.

Eighth place -- Blanco Middle School (830), no further information available.

Ninth place -- North Bend Middle School (720), coached by Bill Berrian and volunteer Adrienne Lance. Team consists Amy Kronsteiner, Amber Wiley, Brandi Freeman, Breann Loya, Brittany Cooper, Jessica Steele and Rachel Crockett.

The next matches will be held in January at the Southwestern Oregon Boys & Girls Club, which is located on Walnut Street in Coos Bay.

Seventh-graders will compete on Jan. 8; eighth-graders on Jan. 15; and sixth-graders on Jan. 22.

Great story although I have noticed some errors with the children. Tiffany Hubbard is the daycare provider for Christian Mullins. She is the mother of Gabrielle Hubbard, not Christian.
