The World is the only daily newspaper published on the Oregon's South Coast, and the only daily newspaper serving that region, exclusively. Its direct lineage dates back to The Coast Mail, first published in 1878, and other early publications that were purchased and merged into large publications. Published as The Coos Bay Times for most of the first half of the 20th century, legendary Oregon newspaper owner/publisher Sheldon Sackett changed the newspaper's name to The World in the 1960's. Little more than a decade after the name change, Sackett sold The World to Scripps League Newspapers, a private group of newspaper owned by E.W. Scripps, grandson and namesake of the publishing giant of the same name.
In 1996, The World was purchased by Pulitzer, Inc., along with all the remaining newspapers in Scripps League. Equipped with the greater resources of a publicly-held company, The World invented and launched several dozen new special editions, upgraded its press equipment and purchased state-of-the-art news, advertising and business management computer software and hardware.
In 1999, The World entered cyberspace with its online edition at www.theworldlink.com.
In 2003, The World purchased the weekly Bandon Western World in Bandon, Ore., following with the acquisition of Reedsport's The Umpqua Post in early 2004.
In 2005, The World and all Pulitzer newspapers were purchased by Lee Enterprises, Inc., of Davenport, Iowa. Today, The World is a member of a family of 58 newspapers in 23 states. With its acquisition of Pulitzer, Inc., Lee Enterprises becomes the fourth largest newspaper group in the United States, in terms of numbers of daily newspapers published. Lee's commitment is that newspapers must operate with complete autonomy in the presentation of news, opinion and feature content, and that the mission of all Lee newspapers must be to continually increase and improve the value of their print and online products to reader/viewers and advertisers.
